Common Foot Problems

Medical issues of the foot and ankle are treated by specialists called podiatrists. A few common issues are listed below.

Heel Pain

Heel pain is one of the most common complaints of the foot. Many different mechanical issues in the foot will eventually lead to heel pain. Common causes include plantar fasciitis, achilles insertional tendonosis, heel spurs, bursitis, arthritis, and injury.

Bunions

A bunion is an excess bone growth and/or misaligned bone in a joint, usually located on the big toe. Bunions almost always occur in conjunction with hallux valgus, a condition where the great toe drifts sideways toward the middle toes.

Hammertoes

A hammertoe is the buckling or curling of joints in the toe due to muscle/tendon imbalance around the toe joints.

Ingrown Nails

Ingrown nails occur when the nail has been cut shorter than the end of the toe and a sharp edge penetrates the skin causing pain and infection. These are very common in young teenagers. The only good treatment is to remove the offending piece of nail. Local anaesthetic is sometimes required.

Fungus Infection

Fungal infections are commonly called athlete’s foot or ringworm, or onychomycosis if the fungus enters the nails. Severe cases or involvement of the nails is best treated with appropriate prescription antibiotics.

Injuries and wounds

Dr. Staley treats a large variety of foot injuries, including fractures, breaks and dislocations. An office visit is often much less expensive than an Emergency Room visit, and treatment is complete without further referral. Established patients will often be seen after hours for immediate care. X-rays are available in office, and are often required.
